IB At Myers Park

Middle Years Program and Diploma Programme
The globally renowned International Baccalaureate Programmes at Myers Park High School

In 1992, Myers Park High School became the first public school in North Carolina to become authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and the first school (public or private) to offer the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).

What IB Programmes do you offer at MPHS?

We offer the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for our 9th and 10th grade students. The IB MYP is design for students aged 11 to 16. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenges, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It posers the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement--essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. We offer Year 4 (9th grade) and Year 5 (10th grade).

We offer the IB Diploma Programme (DP) for our 11th and 12th grade students. The IB DP is a two-year international education programme that prepares students aged 16-19 for success going in to, and throughout, university. The DP offers a holistic approach to teaching and learning with a keen focus on developing intercultural awareness. Students learn to explore and understand the world around them through inquiry, critical thinking and open-mindedness. In the DP, students take university-level classes with exams (that may lead to university/college credit, depending on institutions) and work towards earning an IB Diploma in addition to their high school diploma.

How can I enroll in the IB Programmes at MPHS?
We are one of the high schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district. We are not a magnet programme, which means that students must live in the geographic area zoned for students to attend Myers Park High school. We have an open-enrollment policy for our IB Programmes, which means that once a student is enrolled at Myers Park High School, all one needs to do is register for MYP and/or DP courses. To know if you are zoned to attend MPHS, please visit CMS' Student Placement website.

What does the high school experience look like for an MPHS IB student?
Students enrolled with our IB programmes, have a traditional high traditional school experience, with a rigorous academic schedule. Students are encouraged to get involved in student life activities such as band, choir, sports, clubs, theater, students organizations and more. Our  MYP students are a part of their grade level's  MYP cohort and our  DP students are a part of their grade level's  DP cohort.

How do I know what courses to sign up for?
Check out the Student section of our website. We have created a tab for each grade level that includes information regarding the IB course options for your grade level and year. You will also work with your school counselor to make the best selections and your IB Coordinator will also work with you to ensure that you are on the right path towards the IB Diploma.

Local and global connections
When students enroll in the MYP and DP, they are connected to a global cohort of students as well as students at our sister schools across the district and state.

What are the differences between the IB DP and Advanced Placement courses?
College Board Advanced Placement courses

Advanced Placement (AP) classes are a set of standardized college-level classes developed by the College Board.  There are currently 38 AP classes available. These college level courses range from common subjects like Biology and US History to less common high school offerings like Psychology and Human Geography. Students decide how many and which AP classes they wish to take.  Once the student completes the course, they sit for the AP Subject Exam in an attempt to earn college credit.
IB Diploma Programme

During the two-year course of study, students partake in 6 college-level subjects, 3 taken at higher level (HL) and 3 at standard level (SL). These courses encompass the 6 subject areas prescribed by the IB and students have choices in their choices of courses in most subject groups. Students will also complete 3 additional core components including a Theory of Knowledge class, write an extended essay, and participate in CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) to develop well-rounded, international individuals, who thrive throughout the rest of their lives. At the end of their courses, students complete required exam components in an attempt to earn the IB Diploma and college credit.
Who can take IB and AP courses at MPHS ?
Both programmes are open-enrollment to students at MPHS. However, a student must be enrolled in the MYP and/or the DP programmes to enroll in IB courses. This means that students enroll in the courses needed for each subject grouping. (Please see individual pages for student coursework guide for more information.) AP courses are a la cart, allowing students to pick and choose which they wish to enroll in so IB students can choose to enroll in some AP courses.
