SA Requirements

November 2022: In light of the changes to the MYP program in fall 2022, MYP CAS requirement deadlines are currently suspended while Myers Park administration evaluates how best to support the increased number of students who need access to CAS opportunities.

Every student enrolled in the IB Middle Years Programme must complete Service as Action. SA takes place over the 18 months a student is enrolled in the programme

During Service as Action, you must complete all 7 learning outcomes and conduct and record in Managebac at least 6 meaningful SA experiences.

"Meaningful" SA experiences means that you should be able to write a reflection in the context of the learning outcomes. It is important to note that there is no hour requirement for the experiences. Rather, successful completion of SA is expressed qualitatively (what you've learned and how you've grown) rather than quantitatively (by the amount of hours spent).

You will keep track of your experiences and reflections through a SA Portfolio, kept in our online IB management system, called Managebac.

Where do I keep my SA Portfolio?

You will keep your SA Portfolio in Managebac.

Have questions about Managebac or need to sign up for an account? See the Managebac section of our website for assistance.

Need help learning how to record your SA? Check out the How to use Managebac to record SA guide.

When can I start recording SA?

You can start recording SA experiences the June prior to your starting Year 4 (9th grade) of the Middle Years Programme. You have until April/May of Year 5 (10th grade) to meet all requirements. Be sure to see your cohort's information for specific dates.  These specific dates are there to guide you through your journey and support you to ensure you are able to complete the programme.

What is required to record a SA experience?

First, you will need a Managebac account. Be sure to check out the Managebac section of our website for information on how to access and login to Managebac.

Second, You'll need to follow the steps on the Managebac instructions page for how to record. There will be screenshots and pictures of all the steps.

You will first need to submit your activity for approval. This can be done even after you've done the activity. During this process, you'll name your activity and identify the purpose and aim(s) of your experience. You'll also need to choose which learning outcomes you'll be working on in the activity. This is important because when you conduct your reflections, you'll need to reference how the activity has helped or not helped you to meet those learning outcomes. You'll also have to identify a supervisor who will oversee you during this experience. This should be the adult(s) who are in charge of the activity. It shouldn't be a parent or family member. Do note that it is possible that the activity may not be approved for SA, so it's a good idea to get it approved on Managebac before you do the activity. The IB Coordinator reviews all submitted SA activities to approve or deny. This is usually done within a week of your submission.

Once approved, you'll then do your activity/experience. You'll revisit Managebac and write reflection(s) based on your experience and your personal/academic growth in terms of the SA learning outcomes. Reflections are an important way to demonstrate growth. You'll also submit any evidence you have that you did the activity. This may include picture, flyers, etc.

Once you've conducted your activity, and submitted evidence and reflections, you'll need the person you identified as your supervisor to review your experience and verify that you did indeed do the activity and met the learning outcomes you indicated. There will be a button on Managebac that you will click that will send an email to your supervisor. Your supervisor will not need a Managebac account to fill out the form electronically. Alternatively, if your supervisor wishes to fill out a paper copy, you can print the form, have them fill it out. You'll then scan (take a picture) and attach that form to your Managebac SA Worksheet. At this time, your SA experience will be marked complete

You'll follow this process for each of your SA experiences.

How Many SA Experiences do I need?

You will need 3 Service as Action experiences during 9th grade (Year 4) that meet at least 3 of the learning outcomes.

You will need 3 Service as Action experiences during 10th grade (Year 5) that meet at least 4 of the learning outcomes.

See the deadlines for your specific cohort, linked in the buttons above to assist you in keeping on track.

If you have any questions about meeting the deadlines please contact your IB Coordinator.

Where do I learn about SA opportunities?

We encourage you to identify the opportunities that you are most interested in within your identified communities. SA is personal to you, so you can make it what you wish.

As community opportunities become available, your IB Coordinator will post these opportunities in the Messages tab in Managebac, so it's important that you check Managebac regularly.

You may also find SHARE Charlotte a helpful resource. This organization helps you search for service opportunities in the Charlotte area.

What counts as an SA experience?

How many learning outcomes can each SA experience meet?

SA is unique to you and your interests for personal and academic growth so you can be creative in how you plan your experiences. As this is geared toward your own personal and academic growth, we encourage you to follow things that will interest you in meeting those 7 learning outcomes. As such, no two students will have the same SA experiences recorded.

It is possible that your SA experience may assist you in meeting more than one learning outcome. Make sure that your reflections discuss how you were able to meet each of the learning outcomes you identify.

What doesn't count as SA?

Can I complete a SA experience/project with someone else?

 - You cannot get paid for an experience to count as SA. This includes monetary benefits and receiving a grade in classes for it. (This includes paid internships, babysitting for money, chores for money etc.)

 -
Assisting family members is not a service; it's being a part of the family. (This includes taking out the trash, washing the dishes etc.)

 - Another student cannot serve as your supervisor for the experience.

 - The activity cannot be solely for personal benefit. (This includes college visits, receiving tutoring etc.)
Yes! We encourage you to practice and hone your collaboration skills by working with others.

Do note, however, that you will need to record your own SA experiences in Managebac and they should look different than those you work with. Your reflections should differ from your peers because not everyone will have the same thoughts and reactions to what happens.
