Myers Park High School is a fully authorized IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) school, recognized by the IBO. We offer this for our 9th and 10th grade students.

The IB MYP is design for students aged 11 to 16. It provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum framework. It is designed around seven subject groups: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, mathematics, arts & electives, and health & physical education.

The units of study begin with a guiding question, through which students can connect their learning to the world outside the classroom.
How does the IB MYP work with CMS and NC curriculum requirements?

MYP is a framework that enhances state and national curriculum to assist students in developing students' knowledge and genuine understanding and ability to apply these concepts into new contexts, in preparation for further learning. State and national objectives and standards are the springboard to inquiry-based teaching and learning. They MYP courses will encourage skill development for students to learn how they learn best.

The
MYP philosophy fosters intercultural awareness. As students mature and develop higher order thinking skills, they explore the disciplines in increasing depths and realize how those disciplines are linked to each other and to local and global issues.

The MYP curriculum model

Above is the MYP curriculum model that connects the components and requirements of the programme at MPHS. We'll unpack this below:

Picture
The MYP curriculum model puts our learners at the center of our considerations. In the IB, we look at students as a whole person and not just a student.

The learner profile is is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes. It is a set of ideas that we use as our inspiration, motivation, and focus for teaching and learning.

The learner profile aims to develop learners who are:
  • Inquirers
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Risk-takers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

Approaches to Teaching
Methods and strategies to help all students learn.

Global Contexts
Provides a framework for the standards and gives relevance and meaning to learning. They are:
  • Identities & relationships
  • Orientation in space and time
  • Personal & cultural expression
  • Scientific & technical innovation
  • Globalization & sustainability
  • Fairness & development

Approaches to Learning
Skills students need to manage their learning. They are:
  • Thinking skills
  • Research skills
  • Communication skills
  • Social skills
  • Self-management skills

Concepts
Themes and ideas that may apply to a specific subject or span multiple subjects (interdisciplinary). These allow
MYP students to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local, and global significance and examine knowledge holistically.

Service as Action
This requests students to take action by applying what they are learning in the classroom and beyond as they learn to make meaningful contributions to their community. Please see our Service as Action section of the website for more information on specific requirements.

Personal Project
This encourages students to reflect on their learning and outcome of their learning skills that prepare them for success in further study, the workplace and the community. It is a piece of work that is the product of the student's own initiative and creativity. Please see the Personal Project section of our website for more specific information.

Community Project
Not applicable. This is for students in 8th grade MYP.

Subject Areas
The
MYP requires students to study across subject groups. The required groups are:
  • Language and literature (English)
  • Language acquisition (World Language)
  • Individuals and societies (Social Studies)
