  • There are 6 IB Subject Groups: English, World Languages, Social Studies, Sciences, Math, Arts & Electives.
  • Must take one IB exam in each of the 6 subject groups; students decide which subject group they want to test at a either a Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL).  Download the DP Coursework & Testing chart to view alignment of courses to IB exams.
  • The 6 exams can be completed as a combination of either:
3 HL and 3 SL exams OR 4 HL and 2 SL exams
  • MPHS requires for all IB diploma candidates to take:
English and History as an HL exam.
  • Note: HL and SL is for testing purposes, it does not describe a course on the student transcript.
For example – A student can be in Spanish HL and count their Spanish exam as SL for their IB Diploma.

To earn the IB Diploma students must:
  • Complete CAS Program requirement
  • Earn minimum of 24 points as follows:
    • Extended Essay / TOK --> 0 to 3 points
    • 3 HL diploma exams --> minimum of 12 points (If student chooses to take 4 HL exams, must specify which 3 exams are being applied toward the Diploma requirement)
    • 3 SL diploma exams --> minimum of 9 points (if student takes 4 HL exams, they will take 2 SL exams and still have requirement to earn a minimum of 9 points

  • Earn college credit for specific AP and IB higher level exam scores (check university information).
  • If you are interested in studying abroad, countries like Spain, France and Italy are among some that accept an IB Diploma for entrance into their universities.
  • In the US, AP is more popular than IB.  What this means, is you are among a relatively smaller portion of the college applicant pool with this qualification.  This distinction shows that you’ve not only taken on academic challenges, but done so through a program that’s widely known to be reputable, rigorous and requires a good deal of independent work from its graduates.
  • Lastly, the IB testing results for MPHS are utilized by IBO as a basis for evaluating the quality of the IB Program and effectiveness of our IB teachers.

  Testing & IB Diploma Information

  1. My child is unable to attend one of their scheduled IB examinations.  How can we schedule a make-up exam?

Unfortunately, regardless of the conflicting situation, IBO does NOT allow for any make-up exams. IB examinations are scheduled one year in advance and the tests are scheduled to take place on the same day worldwide. If you have specific questions or concerns, please email the
    IB Coordinator

  2. My child has an established 504 Plan at Myers Park which allows for specific accommodations during testing.  Will those accommodations (ie: extended time, separate setting, scribe, etc) be honored during IB Diploma Testing?

IB Testing registration takes place in the Fall.  The registration form specifically asks if the student has a 504 Plan.  The IB Coordinator submits all testing accommodation needs to IBO for approval.  If you have specific questions or concerns, please please email the IB Coordinator.
